South West Fly Fair

Hemingway Dubbing

Hemingway Dubbing PacketsCzech Nymph Dubbing
Hand-made dubbing blend for the Czech Nymphs in 20 popular colours. It consists of rabbit, fine antron, camel hair, and fine pearlesent fibers.

Quick Descent Dubbing
A mixture with aluminium metal dubbing that sinks like lead, it’ll quickly become a favourite because it dubs so easily.

Deer Hair Dubbing
Excellent, hi-floating mixture with cut, dyed and curled winter deer hair. For tying nymph thoraxes. Great for dry caddis patterns.

Synthetic Dubbing
Synthetic dubbing is generally constructed of nylon materials and resembles natural dubbing quite closely. This material is an excellent substitute in any nymph pattern calling natural dubbing, but synthetic dubbing is a top choice for dry fly tyers because of it’s excellent water resistance capabilities and extremely light weight.

Hare’s Dubbing
Pre-blended 100% rabbit fur. Underfur and guard hairs are blended. This is the most widely used dubbing material. Longer hair makes it easy to dub. Perfect for both dry flies and nymphs.

UV Dubbing
Excellent dubbing with nice sparkle effect will make your pattern more attractive.

Hare’s Plus Dubbing
Hare’s Plus Dubbing is a blend of hare’s ear, guard hairs, and a small touch of fine sparkling fibres, giving your flies very spiky and transloucent appearance. Excellent fur for nymphs, emergers, wets and streamers.

Peacock Dubbing
This is a great substitution of natural peacock herl. Easy to tie buggy looking and durable “peacock” fly bodies.

Starlite Dubbing
HMG Starlite is very fine mylar type material. Can be formed into hanks and used for big streamers or cut for dubbing your small flies. Works very well with most other materials for dubbing and it doesn’t absorb water, so large flies don’t get heavier. If you like stuff that sparkles and glitters it just doesn’t get any better than this.

Successful Flies

The two flies I had the most success with in the last Trout Season were related although one was a tungsten beaded nymph and the other a klink style dry.
The nymph evolved from the Flash Back Pheasant Tail Nymph and the dry evolved from the new nymph. When you fish a water constantly year in year out practicing catch and release, the fish get wise to your offerings, especially the larger fish which you tend to target anyway. Having fished quite a few seasons with the Flash Back PTN very successfully, the season before last I came up with a Quill bodied nymph which worked but was time consuming to tie, so this last season HT came up with the Black Flash Back, quick and easy to tie and a brilliant fish catcher.
Black Flash Back Nymph

Hook: Size 14 Fulling Mill Barbless Nymph or size 15 Tiemco 103BL
Bead: Original was a gold bead – I have used black here, they both work
Thread: Black
Thorax: Black dubbing, here I have mixed in a small amount of pink UV dubbing.
Body: Black Flexi Floss
Rib: Copper Wire
Flash Back: UTC Mirage, also forms the tail
Rib: Copper Wire

It’s the Flexi Floss that makes this nymph, you can control the taper by the amount of pressure you put on it, it sinks, which helps it get down in the water quickly.

With the Black Para Midge, it is also the Flexi Floss that helps get the body under the surface film quickly, this fly is fishing at the right attitude the moment it lands on the water, which can be a problem with dubbed bodies especially if you get floatant on them.

Both these flies are open to experiments with different colours, I’m already trying transparent light olive over yellow fluro floss – it looks good so far.

Sea Trout flies

We are nearly at the end of the season but down here in the West Country fresh sea trout are pushing up the rivers, helped by the constant inflow of fresh water from the rain, there are many patterns to chose from, this one has produced some big sea trout ( that’s big for down here!).

Hook: Treble Size 12
1″ Aluminium tube
Thread: Black
Body: Aluminium tube
Rib: single strand medium silver tinsel
Head: Black thread, varnished
Wings: Opposing strands of orange Crystal Flash
alternating with black squirrel tail.

A fly for pools

The F Fly or CDC Emerging Sedge
All materials have been chosen for their floating capabilities – as you should NEVER GINK CDC – That said, it is a fly for late summer when small dark sedges are about. It should be used in pools and flat glides with a well de-greased leader – It won’t last 5 seconds in a fast run, but will sit right in the surface in flat water.

Hook: Fulling Mill All Purpose Light Barbles
Size: 16 – 20
Thread: Sheer Black
Butt: Orange polypropylene
Body: Muskrat under-fur
Thorax: Natural CDC
Wing: Natural CDC

Take the thread down shank, at the butt take in orange polypropylene, make a small butt. Dub a thin body with muskrat under-fur back up 2/3 the hook shank.
Take 2-3 tips of CDC and align their tips with end of shank. Tie in above body. Trim waste.
Take one waste hackle and strip the flue from both sides and tie this in as an overwing. Trim to length of wing. Take flue from second waste hackle and use as dubbing to form a short thorax. Leave straggly and whip finish.

New Fly Tying Blog

Having moved the Fly Fishing Blog to the new site, we can now use this site for Fly Tying!
We will be bringing reviews, patterns that are working for us at the moment and anything to do with Fly Tying.
So just to start the ball rolling, here’s my favourite high summer pattern (when we eventually get one). This will pull big trout up from the bottom, don’t lift it of too soon as they will follow it downstream for yards before taking it!

Hook: Kamasan B440 Size: 10
Thread: Black 8/0
Underbody: Ethafoam varnished
Body: Peacock herl over tacky varnish
Rib: Blue holographic tinsel
Wings: Fluoro white floss
Head: Black deer hair trimmed to shape, leaving legs at sides
